Formal parties have their charms but what could be more fun than inviting friends over for last minute dinner or cocktail party on the beach, in your backyard, or on your dock by the lake? I'm partial to a Saturday early evening dinner picnic style. A five o'clock gathering means people get to enjoy nature's beauty, a sun that is less intense and natural daylight.

GETTING READY
I love creating what I call a sunken living room outside. Rather than having the usual formal table and chairs, I throw down beach blankets,wicker like cushions and big pillows around a casual, low slung table. I add hurricane lanterns and fresh flowers and the result is an understated and fun environment where guests feel relaxed. Floral Tip: Be sure to make floral arrangements low, dense, and small.

Pulling It All Together

Tip: I get my upholsterer to make outdoor loungers. Its simply a white cushion about 90 inches long by 36 wide by 6 inches tall, upholstered in white sunbrella fabric. These loungers are perfect for parties and relaxing outdoors.
